What is the 3rd House in astrology?
What is the 3rd house in astrology? Well, it is where we see our daily activities & interactions.
After I tell you a bit about what the the 3rd house is about, you might think it is the most mundane house in astrology, and you will be correct.
The house is, in fact, ‘mundane’ because uninteresting activities such as walking, thinking, and driving, are here.
The 3rd House in Astrology and Mobility
We can see how mobile we will or will not be, i.e., how we get from place to place, including automobiles.
Thus, we look to the 3rd for one’s mobility, including the type of transportation used (cars, taxis, buses, and trains). As a result, we can also see short distance travel, i.e., completed trips on the same day.
As you can see, activities here can be viewed as tedious, but to be honest, most of us have a lackluster life!
Most of us spend more time running errands than we spend time with our loved ones. On average, we will drive a car for 4.3 years of our life. We will walk the equivalent of traveling 4 times worldwide in one lifetime.
The themes mentioned above involve activities taking place in our local environment. And it is our environment that shapes our mind, which shapes our being.
The 3rd House and Astrology and Upbringing
Similarly, our early childhood also dictates our behavior more than anything else. However, here in the 3rd one’s childhood is concentrated on early education. Aside from our family teaching us how to speak, we can also learn how to read and write in school or talk to people similar in age.
Furthermore, depending on the neighborhood/city, our locality and early education determine what dialect/slang we will use. Thus, how a person learns, what they think about daily, and how they interact with people falls into 3rd house matters.
As a result, communication, learning, early education, and short courses rather than higher education belong to the 3rd house.
The people we find here are people within our neighborhood, the people we grew up with, or the people we surround ourselves with – meet and socialize with during our daily activities.
The Types of People Found in the 3rd House
Similarly, our neighbors, siblings, cousins, and the people we’ve once locked eyes with on the train when commuting to work can be located here. So, can the people we’ve always said ‘thanks’ to when packing our groceries like shopkeepers/store clerks.
The characters you will find in the third house are the people we just happen to interact with because they are in our immediate environment.
These third house people differ from those we choose to be around, like our friends and acquaintances (found in the 7th & 11th house).
The general rule of thumb is the people in the 3rd house usually are:
- Around the same age as us
- On some equal footing
- Live nearby
- Part of our childhood
- General passers-by
Thus, if you want to identify who you will be close to or what a typical day or daily thoughts look to the 3rd house.
Example: If the ruler of the 3rd is in the sixth house, you may spend a lot of time at the doctors’ surgery, at your place of work, or in the gym.
Signs and Planets
Mercury naturally rules the 3rd house, with Gemini home to the 3rd house, but the sign and ruling planet will change depending on the time you were born.
But, if no planets are in Virgo in the 3rd house, you will spend a lot of time worrying about work, spend time alone, or most of your thoughts will be spent on thinking about cleaning.
As a result, you will constantly be cleaning any shared access with your neighbors, i.e., cleaning the driveway, shared hallways, etc.
With Virgo, you may be overly fussy regarding your siblings, and you will tend to discriminate against your neighbors.
If you are a younger person with Virgo in this house, you could have critical siblings, they could have OCD, or you will think they have it, or a sibling seems almost perfect.
Whereas Pisces and, to some degree, Saturn in the 3rd can show isolation because of restricted mobility.
In terms of planets in the 3rd house but nearing the 4th house, it should be within 5 degrees However, some astrologers say a planet within 5-10 degrees of the 4th house is a ‘conjunction’ to the IC.
A planet conjunct from the 3rd can show somebody frequently moving or frequently viewing homes (this person could make a good estate agent/broker).
Reflection Tip:
Think about how your daily environment shapes your mindset and interactions.
How does your 3rd house show up in your everyday life?
